FTISLAND (FT아일랜드) is a South Korean three-member boy band under FNC Entertainment. The group members consist of Hongki, Jaejin, and Minhwan. They debuted on June 7, 2007 with the album “Cheerful Sensibility.”

FTISLAND Facts:

– The band’s name, FTISLAND, is a short form for “Five Treasure Island”.
– They are known as Korea’s first Idol band.
– The group is labelmates with groups like CNBLUE, AOA, SF9, P1Harmony, Ampers&One and N.Flying.
– Their fandom was named Primadonna because they released the song of the same name in their first album and it means “my own goddess”. (Jaefriends Ep.13)
– They made their Japanese debut a year later in 2008 with “Prologue of FTISLAND -Soyogi-”.
– The group formed the subunit F.T. Triple, consisting of Minhwan, Jaejin and Junghoon in 2009 and they were known as “A3” in Japan.
– None of the members wanted to be the leader but Hong Ki was appointed as the leader to take care of the members.
– The group enjoys immense popularity in Japan.
– The cameras didn’t used to film each member during their performance, especially the drummer, which used to make them really disappointed but that changed after the release of their fifth album “I WILL”. (Jaefriends Ep.13)
– The band is close friends with bands ONE OK ROCK, Redwimps and Alice Nine.
– They felt the most down when they released an album in Korea and it failed during their early debut days and cried a lot. (Drinking Interview)
– FTISLAND was famous for having crazy fans during their early debut days and the members said they heard fans trying to unlock their front door when they were inside, once tried to chase them with a cab and crashed with their van, would break into their home and steal their stuff, and camp outside the emergency exit. The worst of them was when they saw that one fan had taken a dump in their room.

Achievements

– FTISLAND became the first foreign male band in Japan that topped the Oricon Daily Charts in 42 years.
– In 2014, the band performed at China’s biggest music festival “Zebra Music Festival” and the tickets got sold out before the festival even started. (En News World)
– The song “Love Sick” from the their debut album topped the Kpop music charts for eight weeks consecutively.

– Their popular songs include “Bad Women”, “After Love”, “Love Sick”, “I Hope” and “Hello Hello”.

Awards

– FTISLAND has won several prestigious awards including multiple Bonsang awards and Popularity awards.
– They also won multiple rookie awards in their debut year and for their song “Love Sick”.

1. Hongki

Hongki Facts:

– Hongki once failed in an arm wrestling contest with Jessi. (Showterview with Jessi EP.67)
– Jae Jin said he is famous for loving someone like ‘fireworks’ because it sparks, but quickly dies. (The Manager Ep 182)
– He is a homebody.
– His ideal type is someone similar to Song Hye Kyo.
– He would pursue a career in fashion if he wasn’t a singer.
– He used to feel uncomfortable and would get in trouble because his agency’s CEO was a Christian and he would pick him up and force him to visit the church on Sundays.  (Newston)

2. Jaejin

Jaejin Facts:

– Jaejin is the middle man when Hong Ki and Minhwan fight.
– He loved BTS’s song “Blood Sweat and Tears” and his favorite member is Jimin. (Hongki’s Kiss the Radio)
– He is a big fan of Red Velvet.
– He got nicknamed “Apujeong Prince” by Hong Ki because he was frequently visiting the area because of his friends and the nickname went viral.  (Jaefriends Ep.13)
– He chose bass as his musical instrument because he thought it would be the easiest to learn but later realized it was very tough.
– His specialty according to other members is socialty.
– When he first met Hong Ki, he thought that he hadn’t met someone like this his entire life.
– He said he is good at expressing his feelings.

3. Minhwan

Minhwan Facts:

– Minhwan and Hong Ki used to fight the most and once the fight got so big that they almost disbanded.  (홍기종기)
– He made his debut at the age of 15.
– He is not good at dancing.
– He has an opposite personality from Hong Ki and said used to be scared of how easily Hong Ki used to get angry at the CEO and the company. (WKorea)
– He was nicknamed “Marriage evangelizer”.

– He likes listening to music in his spare time.
– Members always said that he will be the first to get married in the group.
– He once cried because there were no drums set up for him during a performance in Jeju so he had to watch the show from the sidelines and couldn’t participate because the management didn’t know FTISLAND was a band.
– His favorite FTISLAND’s songs from their career include “To The Light” and “Find the Light”.
– He loves to eat chicken.
– He got married to LABOUM‘s Yulhee in October 2018 and went on to have a son and two twin daughters. They got divorced on  December 4, 2023 and he got the kids by mutual agreement.

4. Seunghyun

Seunghyun Facts:

– Seunghyun was once scouted by SM and would’ve debuted with SHINee but he didn’t sign the contract.
– He wanted to be an actor before he debuted with the band.
– While they were touring in Japan, he made the “Soba Song” because they were getting to eat soba in Japan and Hong Ki got sick of it.
– He likes to play badminton, football, table tennis and go swimming in his spare time.
– He hates to get his nails done because Hong Ki once dragged them all to the nail salon and the worker there drew 11 silver spiders on his nails which made him freak out. He couldn’t even remove the nails and they also ended up being edited out of the MV because they were too sparkly. (OSEN)

– Due to severe dehydration, he was onced rushed to the emergency room after drinking because he drank on an empty stomach and couldn’t move his body after he woke up. (Drinking Interview)
– In late December 2019, he left FTISLAND to pursue his career as an actor and three years later, in February 2024, announced his retirement from the industry to get married and move to the US to start his new life.
– He married his non celebrity girlfriend on June 8, 2024.

5. Jonghoon

Jonghoon Facts:

– Jonghoon was considered the most stingy member.
– He likes listening to music and exploring the net in his spare time.
– He used to be good friends with Minkyung and used to go from Seoul to Ilsan to see her but used to tell her he was there for some business. (Happy Together)
– He is good at playing the guitar, bass, and piano.
– His worst breakup was when he started dating a girl he really liked but one day she suddenly ghosted him after meeting him on his birthday and read all his messages but didn’t reply. (KBS2 HD 5.1 | 2013 show)
– He likes to eat Gamjatang.
– Members said he is the member most concerned with their looks. (Soompi)
– He was mostly interested in girl groups and didn’t know much about boy groups according to the members. (Hongki’s Kiss the Radio)
– Junghoon was involved in filming and distributing explicit sexual videos of women in chat rooms without their consent that was revealed in March 2019 and he was removed from the group and retired from the music industry.
– He got sentenced to five years in prison November 29, 2019 and was released in November 2021 after his sentence was reduced to two and a half years.

Wonbin Facts:

– Wonbin left FTISLAND due to conflict in musical preferences.
– His ideal type is someone who is good at sports, cooking and has a tall height.
– He is skilled at playing the guitar and harmonica.

– He said he took the decision to leave even if he might lose everything he had worked hard for because he wanted to try something new.
– He left FTISLAND in 2009.
