TVXQ!/DBSK (동방신기) is a South Korean duo under SM Entertainment. The group members consist of Yunho and Changmin. The duo initially debuted as a five-member group on December 26, 2003, with the single “Hug“.

– TVXQ! is also known as ‘Dong Bang Shin Ki’ (DBSK) in Korea and Tohoshinki in Japan.
– Their official color is Pearl Red 185C (#E4002B).
– Before the group was named TVXQ!, they were offered a variety of names including SM5, Dream Team, O Jang Yuk Bu (The Five Visceras and the Six Entrails), Jeon Meok Go (A Whale That Eats Legends), and Dong Bang Bul Pae (Invincible East). They gained permission to use ‘Dong Bang Bul Pae’ but it was later rejected as the Hanja didn’t look pretty. They finally settled with ‘Dong Bang Shin Ki’ which was recommanded by Lee Soo Man’s acquaintance.
– They first debuted as TVXQ! in Japan but they failed to get recognition so they reintroduced themselves as ‘Tohoshinki’, learned Japanese, and moved to Japan for the release of their first official Japanese single.
– Their lead singles are known as “SMP” which is a mix of orchestral pop, rock, hip hop, and contemporary R&B combined with high notes and vocals.
– They are nicknamed “Asia’s Stars” and the “Kings of K-pop” for their contributions to the Hallyu wave.
– Most of their songs include lyrics with dark social commentary.
– TVXQ!’s official lightstick is named ‘Byeolbong’.

– Their tour ‘Begin Again Tour’ in 2017 was the highest-attended tour ever held by a foreign music act, bringing over a million people.

– They became the first Korean idol group to achieve 10 million copies of album sales in 2013.

Popularity in Japan

– In 2013, they were the first foreign artist to perform at the Nissan Stadium for 2 days which is Japan’s largest and the most difficult venue to perform in. They were the 13th artist in the history of the venue including Japanese artists.
– TVXQ! holds the record for the most number-one singles for a foreign artist in Japan according to Oricon.
– They are Japan’s best-selling foreign music act in CD singles of all time and were the first foreign Asian artists to headline a nationwide five-Dome tour.
– Their ‘Time Tour’ in 2013 was the highest-attended concert tour held by a foreign music act in Japan.

Legal Battle & Formation of JYJ

– In July 2009, former members Jaejoong, Yoochun, and Junsu filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment, seeking to split from the company.
– The claims included an excessively long thirteen-year contract, unauthorized schedules, and unfair profit distribution.
– The three members later formed the trio JYJ under Avex which was handling TVXQ!’s activities in Japan.
– In 2012, S.M. Entertainment and JYJ ended their three-year legal dispute by dropping their lawsuits against each other and agreeing not to interfere with each other’s activities.
– It was confirmed that JYJ’s contracts with S.M. Entertainment had ended in July 2009.
– TVXQ!’s last public performance as a five-member group was on December 31, 2009 when they performed “Stand by U“.
– In August 2010, Yunho and Changmin performed re-recorded versions of older the group’s songs as a duo and gained support from the fans, thus they decided to continue activities as a duo.
