Leeteuk (이특) is a South Korean singer-songwriter, MC, and a member of the boy group Super Junior under SM Entertainment. He is also a member of the subunits Super Junior-T and Super Junior-Happy.

Car Accident

– On April 19, 2007, almost two months after Super Junior-T’s first single “Rokuko” was released, a severe car accident occurred involving Leeteuk and Kyuhyun, along with Shindong, Eunhyuk, and two managers. The incident took place as they were returning home after recording the radio show Super Junior Kiss the Radio. While driving on the highway, the front left tire of their van burst while switching lanes, causing the vehicle to collide with the guard rail/median on the driver’s side and skid for about 30 meters. The van eventually flipped over onto its right side due to the momentum.
– Leeteuk had glass shards embedded in his back and above his eyes, requiring over 170 stitches. and Kyuhyun, who was in a coma, had slim chances of survival. Eunhyuk and Shindong sustained minor injuries.
– Fortunately, all of them recovered and resumed their activities with the group.

Struggle with Depression & Military Service

– He went to therapy for 2 years due to depression.
– During his military service his depression got worse, he cried every day for a year. His medicines were so strong that they would make him throw up and faint.  (Leeteuk’s Interview)
– Due to his severe depression he could be discharged from the military earlier than he did but he chose not to because of the criticism he would have to face after that.
– The turning point in his life was when he returned from his military service, he was in a very dark phase mentally and the only thing that made him want to live was the members and their support. (CREA 2023)

Father’s Death

– During the time he was enlisted in the military, his father, struggling with depression and financial difficulties, suffocated Leeteuk’s grandparents, who suffered from dementia, before taking his own life in January 2014.
– His father left a note taking responsibility for his actions and seeking forgiveness from his children.

Awards

– He won the “Best Entertainer Award (Talk Show category)” at the 6th SBS Entertainment Awards for “Strong Heart” in 2012 and the “Newcomer Award” at the 7th Daegu International Musical Festival for “The Promise” in 2013.
