Early Life

– He was born and grew up in Seoul, South Korea.
– He went to Chungam Elementary School and National Gugak Middle School.
– He graduated from the National Korean Traditional Music High School in 2007.
– He studied both Western and traditional Korean music when he was young.

Eating Disorder

– Himchan struggled with body image issues and had an eating disorder since he was young to the point where he said he can’t look at himself if he gains weight.
– He once lost 7kg over three months due to the group’s promotions in 2016 and in 2017 he got a hairline fracture in his ribs which was diagnosed after he had a sudden pain in the chest and was rushed to the hospital.
– The doctors said the injury was not due to external impact but because of sudden weight loss due to extreme dieting. (Koreaboo)
– His disorder became a topic of controversy after his best friend CNBLUE’s Jonghyun jokingly told him to lose weight only a month after the above incident.

Controversies

Sexual Assault Cases & Suicide Attempt

– Himchan was accused of sexual harassment by a woman in July 2018 but he denied the accusation, claiming the interaction was consensual and that there were mutual feelings of interest. His appeal was dismissed and he was found guilty of the charge on February 24, 2021 and was sentenced to 10 months in prison.
– He tried to attempt suicide in June 13, 2021 after posting an apology on Instagram but was saved.
– He later was accused of harrasing two women outside the bar in April 2022 while they were all intoxicated only five days after he was found guilty of the first case.
– He got involved in his third sexual harrasment case after he raped a woman while filming illegally and sent it to her after a month. The prosecutors this time wanted Himchan to get a seven year prison sentence but he got a lenient punishment of suspended 3 years imprisonment, 40 hours of education of sexual violence, five years of probation and prohibition of working anywhere with children, youngsters and disabled people for 3 years.
– The judges mentioned the reason for a light punishment because he showed “remorse” and deleted all the content he filmed without distributing to a third person. They also rejected the need for him to wear an ankle tracker as the prosecutors hoped.
– Fans became furious over the mild punishment given and questioned the justice system in Korea.

DUI

– On October 26, 2020, Himchan was involved in a drunk driving incident, though no one was injured. He issued a public apology the next day and took full responsibility for his actions and promised to live more responsibly and reflectively from then on.
