SEVENTEEN (세븐틴) is a thirteen-member K-pop boy group under Pledis Entertainment. The group members are S.coups, Wonwoo, Mingyu, Vernon, Woozi, Jeonghan, Joshua, DK, Seungkwan, Hoshi, Jun, The8, and Dino. They debuted on May 26, 2015, with the mini album “17 Carat.”

Controversies

1. Mingyu’s Bizzare Collage Work

– Mingyu was swept up in a controversy when his art work was made public on Instagram.
– The collage art featured images of dismembered bodies, decapacitated heads of women, bloodied undergarments and sexual parts along with a man featured holding a camcorder. Additionally, Mingyu was seen intact and dressed.
– Netizens expressed shock and disturbance over the work, claiming it was a work of misogyny and objectification of women in the name of art.
– The Instagram account that revealed the work was later made private but Mingyu or Pledis Entertainment released no statement regarding the issue.

2. Lack of Cultural Understanding

– In 2023, SEVENTEEN received criticism after they featured the image of the ‘Great Wall of China’ as the background of their 11th mini album for their Beijing version of the promotional video.

3. Wonwoo’s Past ‘Anti-SNSD’ Comments

– Under the username ‘namdoll’ he had called them ‘trash’, accused them of getting plastic surgery and had posted unattractive photos of the members.
