Wonder Girls (원더걸스) was a South Korean four-member girl group under JYP Entertainment. The group consisted of Yeeun, Yubin, Sunmi, and Hyelim. They initially debuted as five members on February 13, 2007 with ‘The Wonder Begins.’

– Wonder Girls were JYP Entertainment’s first girl group.
– The initial line-up at the time of debut was Sunye, Sohee, Hyuna, Sunmi, and Yeeun. Hyuna left shortly after their debut due to health issues and was replaced by Yubin. Over the years, the group underwent several lineup changes. Sunmi left in 2010 to pursue academics and was replaced by trainee Hyerim.
– The group didn’t have a fixed leader after Yeeun left the group.
– They were in the 2nd generation Kpop along with 2PM, Kara, BigBang, 2ne1 etc.
– All the group members were Christians except for Sohee who was a buddhist.
– Their entry in the US market was a turning point in their career as they had halted their domestic activities which made their popularity die down in Korea and despite being ranked on Billboard, they didn’t manage to maintain the popularity. JYP acknowledged his bad move as the members didn’t really wanted to enter the US market and were against it.
–  They were nicknamed as the “South Korea’s Retro Queens” for their music inspired by the 1960s-80s.
– They also had a TV movie with Nickelodeon released in the US.
– Wonder Girls went into a two-year hiatus and returned as a four-member band, including Sunmi, who rejoined the group in 2015.
– In 2013, Sunye went on hiatus after her marriage and later retired, while Sohee left JYP to focus on acting.
– The group disbanded in January 2017 after Sunmi and Yeeun chose not to renew their contracts.
– They marked their 10th anniversary with a farewell single, “Draw Me,” on February 10, 2017.

Achievements

– They were ranked Singer of the Year by Gallup Korea in 2007 and 2008.
– Their hit song “Nobody” made history as the first K-pop track to enter the Billboard Hot 100, charting at number 76.
– Wonder Girls did 51 shows in the US and were the opening act for the Jonas Brothers in 2009. (Dive Studios)
– The group had managed to win a daesang with their song “Nobody” as a rookie group, beating out TVXQ! and BIGBANG. 

Major Works

– Their popular songs include “Tell Me”, “Why So Lonely” and “Rewind”.

Awards

– In 2008, Wonder Girls won numerous awards, including the prestigious Daesang at the 18th Seoul Music Awards only a year after their debut.
– They won a total of 49 awards in their decade-long career.

– Her father is a taekwondo grandmaster and promoter of the martial art.

– She lived in Hong Kong for 14 years.
– When she debuted, people used to think she was Chinese because of her fluent Chinese and Cantonese and her history of living in Hong Kong.
– She married her husband Shin Minchul in 2020, after dating for seven years and had their first son in 2022 and their second son in 2024.
– She was added to Wonder Girls in 2010 after Sunmi’s hiatus.

7. Sunye

Sunye Facts:

– Sunye is a huge fan of tteokbokki.
– She did not have a good relationship with her father when she was young and he wasn’t initially supportive of her dream.

– In 2001, she became popular when she appeared on a talent show and always got first place by fan votes. YG’s Yang Hyunsuk also wanted her to join YG and Super Junior’s Donghae and actor Gong Yoo also remembered her as a child.
– She married missionary James Park on January 26, 2013, whom she met during a missionary trip to Haiti and they have three kids.
– During Wonder Girls car accident, she got hurt the most because she hugged Sunmi to protect her as she was sleeping in the middle of the van.
– She left Wonder Girls in 2015.
– After a long hiatus, she debuted as a solo artist on July 26, 2022, with the EP “Genuine”.
