SHINee (샤이니) is a four-member South Korean boy group that initially debuted as five under SM Entertainment. The group members currently consist of Onew, Key, Minho, and Taemin. They debuted on May 25, 2008, with the promotional song “Replay”.

– The group’s name, SHINee, is a combination of “shine” (meaning light) and the suffix “ee,” symbolizing “one who receives the light.”
– The members joined SM Entertainment in the following order: Minho, Jonghyun, Taemin, Key, and Onew.
– Their lightstick is called ‘Shating Star’ which is a combination of the words “Shinee” and “Shooting Star”.
– They are considered one of the best live vocal groups in K-pop and they are known for highly synchronized and complex dance routines.
– Their official fandom club’s name is ‘SHINee WORLD’ (샤이니월드) and their fans are called Shawols.
– Key is appointed as the fashion director of the group.
– On March 26, 2012, the group, along with their labelmates, received 340 shares and became stockholders of SM Entertainment.
– Their signature musical style is contemporary R&B.
– Fans use emoticons for all members based on their facial features: Onew (^▽^), Jonghyun (Haha), Key (`ㅂ´*), Minho (ㅍ ㅍ), and Taemin (^^;; | 6v6).

– On February 17, 2012, SHINee was the sole Korean artist invited to China’s Lunar New Year Program, Chun Jie Wan Hui.
– On June 19, they became the first Asian artists to perform at Abbey Road Studios in London, hosting their Japan Debut Premium Reception there.
– They were invited as the opening act for the 6th London Korean Film Festival in November 2011, marking the first independent concert by any Korean artist(s) in London.
– On June 22, 2011, they debuted in Japan with the Japanese version of “Replay,” achieving significant sales and becoming the highest-selling South Korean group debut on Oricon at that time.

Jonghyun’s Passing

– On December 18, 2017, Jonghyun passed away due to carbon monoxide poisoning which was concluded as suicide.
– His funeral was later held on December 21, 2017, and was attended by many K-pop celebrities and fans.

Awards

– In 2008, They won the ‘Newcomer Album of the Year’ at the 23rd Golden Disc Awards after they released their first studio album and also won the “Best New Male Group” at the MAMA Awards.
– The group received the ‘Best Dance Performance Award’ at the Mnet Asian Music Awards three times consecutively for performances to “Sherlock (Clue + Note),” “Dream Girl,” and “View.”
– They won the ‘Asia’s Best Group Award’ at the 23rd DongFang Music Awards in Shanghai, the only K-pop act invited to attend and perform.

Jonghyun Facts:
