Best Kpop Profiles To Know About in 2024

BTS

BTS

BTS, also known as the Bangtan Boys, has emerged as a global sensation, breaking 23 Guinness World Records and entering the Guinness World Records 2022 Hall of Fame. But their journey to success was far from easy. Debuting from a lesser-known agency known as BigHit Entertainment (HYBE) in 2013, they remained relatively unknown until 2015.

From all seven members sharing one room and bathroom as trainees to handing out fliers for a free concert after their debut, their journey to fame was not easy. Even after success, the group struggled with imposter syndrome and bullying from peers. Despite everything, the group persevered and are now the most streamed Kpop group on Spotify followed by BLACKPINK and TWICE. Read BTS Kpop Profile!

BLACKPINK

BLACKPINK

Debuting in 2016 under YG Entertainment, BLACKPINK became the first Kpop girl group to perform at Coachella in 2019, just three years into their debut. But unlike most idols who debut after a few years of training, all the members had an extensive training period ranging from 4 years minimum to 6 years. The members used to train for 14 hours everyday and could barely afford food as trainees, eating eggs and strawberry jam on most days. They all shared one room which was frequented by centipedes and roaches.

BLACKPINK is now nicknamed as the ‘biggest girl group in the world’ as their Youtube channel holds the record for the most subscribed and most viewed music artist channel, surpassing Justin Bieber in subscribers and are the most followed and streamed girl group on Spotify. In 2022, their concert tour became the highest-grossing tour by a female group in history. Read BLACKPINK Kpop Profile!

SEVENTEEN

SEVENTEEN

SEVENTEEN is recognized as ‘Performance Kings’ and ‘Self Producing Idol Group’ and they debuted in 2015 with 13 members under Pledis Entertainment. They were originally supposed to debut in 2013 but their company went bankrupt and the members revealed that those 2 years felt like ‘forever’.

The group finally got to debut when their vice president sold their house for the group. The members in return gave their all and self produced their debut song which became an instant hit. They went on to win three rookie awards in just their first year of debut and have won multiple Daesang awards (the most prestigious awards in Korea) throughout their career. TWICE

Twice

Formed on the survival show ‘SIXTEEN’ under JYP Entertainment, TWICE debuted in 2015 and just a year after their debut, they unlocked many first times including, becoming the first Kpop girl group to win ‘Song of the Year’ award for three years consecutively to being the first girl group to debut #1 on Billboard World charts (both song and album charts) in 2018.

The group had a tough trainee period as they were made to go through intense dieting and training with members revealing that they had to eat snacks in the restroom so they wouldn’t be caught snacking and would be sent off to the gym to shed off calories. Despite the initial struggles, TWICE became a worldwide sensation, especially in Japan as they were the first Kpop girl group in the history of Kpop to hold a Japan dome tour which sold out all of its tickets. Nicknamed as the ‘Next Generation Leaders’, they continue to dominate the Billboards with each of their releases. In 2022, they were the third Kpop boy group to get 10 million subscribers on YouTube, after Kpop titans BTS and BIGBANG. EXO

EXO

Debuting in 2012 under SM Entertainment, EXO had a bad start in their career and were called ‘SM’s First Biggest Failures’ in their debut year. Since the agency was home to the then Kpop titans like Super Junior, SHINee and Girls’ Generation, the pressure was immense and the group failed to deliver.

As a result, their promotions were halted and they were locked in the SM dungeon, meaning that their phones were confiscated and they could not contact anyone, not even their families. The members trained for 17 hours and started performing on the street.

They even performed in a 2012 Chungju rice event and got paid with bags of rice. But all that struggle just fueled their passion and they became the first Kpop artists to be featured on Dubai’s Burj Khalifa. EXO since then has achieved a ‘Septuple million seller’ status and holds the record for having the fastest selling concert ticket in the world, selling 120,000 tickets in 0.2 seconds. The group gained popularity for their looks and songs but they faced the dreaded ‘Black Ocean’ in 2008 where none of the audience turned on their lightsticks or cheered them on at the Dream Concert because of a fanwar.

They however rose to fame in 2009 with the Kpop’s evergreen song ‘Gee’ and won nine times in a row, their concert tickets selling out in less than 3 minutes. The members revealed that during their trainee period, along with going through strict dieting and training for 13 hours, they also were responsible for cleaning the bathroom, windows and cafeteria. Also under SM Entertainment, SHINee debuted with a bang in 2008 and snagged all of the rookie awards in their debut year. The group was once compared to the British boyband ‘The Beatles’ as they were immensely popular in the UK, being the first Kpop group to hold a concert in London.

Ironically, the company didn’t expect much from the group as they considered the group as an experiment. Their popularity and influence in Korea earned them the nickname “Princes of K-pop”. Unfortunately the group’s struggles came in 2017, 9 years after their debut, when one of their members, Jonghyun, committed suicide, shaking the Kpop industry. Read SHINee Kpop Profile!

BIGBANG

The group initially debuted as a five member group in 2006 under YG Entertainment and had a tough trainee period as they all used to live in a tiny room, all crammed up, which was often visited by rats.

But all their struggles paid off when they went to become the most powerful celebrities of South Korea and in 2016, they ranked 3rd for the most annual earnings for a boy band, only behind One Direction and Backstreet Boys. The group became the fastest Kpop girl group to rank on Billboard 200 and their debut album topped #1 on iTunes Top Album in many countries including Singapore, Indonesia, Jana and Brazil. Their debut was well received by the Korean public and was named as one of the ‘best debuts of 2014’ but the group was scolded and criticised by the company as they thought the members weren’t ‘good enough’. But all the criticism didn’t dim their light as each member’s solo song ranked on the Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales chart, becoming the second Kpop group to achieve this feat.
